I have been putting off writing this review for DAYS….. And believe me when I say this: This is a story that will STAY with you. Every time I think about what I read my chest hurts and I my eyes tear up from the multitude of emotions I experienced when reading this book. I feel like anything I say could never be enough. It’s a story that one must experience for themselves plain and simple.
“There is not one specific minute, hour, or even day that changed my life. It was one summer; one twisted summer when everything derailed into endless complication.”
The story begins in 1971, Tulma Tennessee. Young Caroline and Isaiah are in love. Caroline is white and Isaiah is black. Rights may have changed during this time period but society had not, especially in small towns like Tulma. Forced to keep their relationship secret these two make the best of what little time they can spend together.
“I’m gonna make you laugh every day for as long as you let me,” he vows.
Isaiah is being raised by a single mother and Caroline poor Caroline has an awful home life. No she isn’t physically abused but her parents are COMPLETELY checked out. After gaining attention from two of their small towns worst citizens, Caroline experiences an event that will break your heart and change her life forever. Forced to leave town she finds herself alone and trying to move on from her painful past and broken heart……
If you are willing to step out your book box and try something completely different I highly recommend this book. This is not just a story. It is a slow building emotional journey. To be honest it took me a few chapters to get into the story. Before I knew it I had this ache in my chest that kept growing as I was reading. Then came the tears….. In the Fields will slowly rip your heart to shreds and then tape it back together.
A few things you should know about this book:
-There is a rape scene.
-There is some language that some may find offensive.
-It will break your heart. Several times.
-It has a HEA
